Green insurance card

Die

Many drivers traveling in other European countries always have their green insurance card to hand. However, the card is no longer green and in many countries it is not even mandatory. Find out why it can still be useful to carry the card and everything else you need to know about the Green Insurance Card here.

What is the Green Insurance Card?

The Green Insurance Card, also known as the International Motor Insurance Card, confirms that the vehicle has valid motor vehicle liability insurance. It is therefore proof that the vehicle owner is insured in the event of an accident abroad. The insurance card contains all the important information about the vehicle, the owner and the insurance company.

Since 1965, the card has been printed on green paper, which gave it its name. Since 2021, however, white paper has been used so that drivers can print out the card themselves.

When do you need the Green Insurance Card?

However, the insurance card is now superfluous in most EU member states and some other European countries such as Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Croatia and Switzerland due to the license plate agreement. This is because these countries have agreed to recognize the respective national license plate as proof of existing liability insurance. This is intended to promote international traffic and simplify control processes.

Even after Brexit, drivers in the UK will not have to carry an insurance card.

However, in countries that are not part of the license plate agreement, the insurance card is still mandatory and in some cases must be presented upon entry. These include:

  • Albania
  • Moldova
  • North Macedonia
  • Tunisia
  • Turkey
  • Ukraine

The insurance card has also been replaced in Italy by the license plate agreement, but the police often ask for the document in the event of an accident. It is therefore advisable to have the insurance card with you there. If in doubt, you can ask your insurance company whether such a card is compulsory at your destination.

How do I get the green insurance card?

The green insurance card is issued by the respective motor insurance company and is free of charge. Many insurance companies now offer the option of applying for the card online.

How long is the Green Insurance Card valid for?

The expiration date can be found on the insurance card. The card is usually valid for three to five years.
