What is an international driving license?

An international driving license serves as a translation of the national driving license and supplements it. It enables the holder to legally drive a vehicle in other countries. The international driving license is only valid in combination with the German driving license and is written in several languages. This is to avoid misunderstandings during traffic checks in foreign countries.

Where is an international driving license required?

Within the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), a valid German driving license is recognized. An additional translation is not required. Furthermore, a German driver’s license is sufficient in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Great Britain, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine. In Albania, Russia and Moldova, however, an international driving license is recommended.

In many countries outside Europe, a translation of the driver’s license is also required. These include Australia, Indonesia, China, Brazil, Bolivia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, the USA and Canada.

How do you get an international driving license?

You can apply for the document at the local driving license authorities. These are usually the driving license offices or road traffic offices in the city or district. The following documents are relevant for the issue:

  • Valid national driver’s license
  • Biometric passport photo
  • Identity card or passport
  • Application form (you can usually obtain this on site or on the website of the driving license office)

How long does it take to get an international driving license?

If the application is made in person on site, the document can often be taken away directly. This usually takes less than an hour.

How much does an international driving license cost?

The cost of the document varies depending on the region and driving license office. As a rule, issuing a license costs between 15 and 20 euros. If the driving license is not issued directly but sent by post, there are usually additional postage costs.

How long is an international driving license valid for?

How long the document is valid depends on which version it is. There is both the version based on the 1968 model road traffic agreement and the version based on the 1926 model agreement. The cover sheet shows which model is used. The 1968 model is the more common and is valid for three years. In contrast, the 1926 model is only valid for one year.

A new application is required after the expiry date. An extension is not possible.

What happens if you drive without an international driving license?
