Vehicle identification number

Die Fahrzeugidentifikationsnummer ist eine unverwechselbare, 17-stellige Nummer. Diese ist an verschiedenen Stellen am und im Fahrzeug zu finden.

Every vehicle has it: the unique vehicle identification number. In this article, we explain the meaning of the VIN, its structure and why it is so important in the vehicle fleet.

What is the vehicle identification number?

The vehicle identification number, or VIN for short, is a unique 17-digit serial number. It is also known as the chassis number or VIN – short for Vehicle Identification Number– and is assigned to every vehicle. The VIN serves as a fingerprint and ensures that every vehicle, regardless of model and manufacturer, is uniquely identifiable.

Why is the vehicle identification number important in the vehicle fleet?

One of the most important functions of the VIN is the complete documentation of the vehicle’s history. The VIN is used to record previous owners, accidents, repairs and maintenance histories of a vehicle.

Many fleet management software solutions offer the option of uploading all vehicle data via a VIN query. This saves a lot of time in fleet management, as fleet managers do not have to manually type in the technical information about a vehicle. Instead, this information is automatically uploaded to the system thanks to the VIN query.

Workshops can use the vehicle identification number to call up information on the service history and standard equipment and easily order suitable spare parts.

Regardless of fleet management, the VIN gives potential buyers an insight into the vehicle’s past when purchasing a used car. The VIN also plays an important role in theft protection and the tracing of stolen vehicles. It enables law enforcement authorities to identify and recover a stolen vehicle.

How is the FIN structured?

The FIN consists of three parts and is structured as follows:

  • Digit 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) indicates the production location and brand
  • Digits 4-9: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) describes vehicle model, vehicle type and series
  • Digits 10-17: Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) provides information on model year, production plant and vehicle serial number

The digits zero to nine and all letters of the alphabet with the exception of I, O and Q appear in the FIN. This prevents confusion with the digits zero and one.

Where can I find the vehicle identification number?

The VIN can be found in several places. On the one hand, it can be found in the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document) and part II (vehicle registration document). It can also be found in various places in and on the vehicle:

  • Engine compartment or directly on the bodywork
  • B-pillar between driver and passenger door
  • Lower edge of the dashboard, readable from the outside through the windshield
